Many computer-savvy individuals know of Twitter as a social networking application, however, they may not be aware of Twitter as a kind of advertising media that can be used to pass along useful information to a particular target audience. The maximum character limit for Twitter is 140 characters. So the messages you choose to send, although being very short, must still be able to create interest for your customers to open and read them. You have to grow the network and have a large number of followers so that your tweets are sent across to many people. Having a very large list of friends associated with your Twitter account will make sure that your message gets seen by a big group of people that might eventually become customers.

Firstly, you need to get a Twitter account right away if you don’t have one. Without it, you can’t start driving traffic. Getting a Twitter account is completely free, and your contact list can be scanned to see if you already have people you know using twitter. Immediately after registering, you can begin using your account and prepare it by adding a link to your blog/website to your profile and include a picture of yourself or your business’s logo. Twitter doesn’t permit you to upload or store any pictures into your own personal photo album, nor does it permit anything beyond micro-blogging which makes Twitter unique from other social networking pages that exist such as MySpace or Facebook. You can, however, add a picture or share them with friends as part of an update. When you have set up your account with Twitter, you can start following people. People you follow are simply people you have subscribed to, you will be shown all of their updates. If one of the people you are following tweets, you can see it on your profile page righ then. To follow a person, all you have to do is click on the button that says follow located below the picture on their profile page. You will see that the higher the number of people that you follow, the higher the number of people that will follow you and this is an excellent strategy for driving traffic.

Twitterfeed may be used to join your RSS feed to your Twitter account, effectively automating twitter for you. This simply means that every time you update your RSS feed, it connects to your Twitter account and automatically posts there. This is quite a helpful way of making sure that whenever you update your site, anyone following you will receive that information. But remember, too many post tweets in too short a time – especially if you’ve nothing else to say in between – will get you labeled a spammer and you’ll lose followers and creditability. Try to mix these updates with your natural tweets. Twitter can literally be a priceless tool for marketers looking to find quality, targeted traffic that is likely to convert. However, it is important that time and effort are vital to producing huge results. To drive traffic to your website keep your updates consistent, intersperse them with your own commentary, and interact with others in a genuine way.
